How Can Young Professionals Prove Theyre Job Ready There is a great deal of focus on the challenges associated with young professionals obtaining  employment. We are in  the midst of  a changing employment market, where individuals stay in  work longer and roles are being lost to automation.  The greatest challenge for our youth today, however, appears to not necessarily be their chosen skill sets. Instead, its their  understanding of job readiness and willingness to  make themselves attractive to employers. Many large organisations run great internship and graduate recruitment programs, however as one multi-national company told me last week, the ability to find those who are actually job ready is growing more challenging each year. What abilities do youth today need to showcase in order  to be classed job ready? Clear communication Communication skills do not mean that they have to be the most extraverted, articulate or  capable communicator in the business. What prospective employers need to see is that they  are confident in their  own communication style and have the maturity to verbally communicate at a professional level, as well as in writing. Remember, once in employment, they  will be communicating with a very diverse array of people representing different cultures, experience, beliefs and business levels. Professional presentation All organisations have a strong brand that they want to uphold and all good organisations know that their employees generally are the face of their business. The way young professionals present themselves  to the business, online and offline, will be key to identifying whether they will meet the expectations and culture of the business. Again, organisations are not after people who dress  or  appear a certain way, rather they are after people who take pride in their appearance and are able to match this to what is required of the job. Hint here, never turn up to an interview in ripped jeans and thongs! Time management This one is always a challenge for many individuals to demonstrate but having some examples of how they have effectively managed  their  time would be very helpful. Time management can be demonstrated through the ability to work part time whilst committing to studies, attend sporting events or even juggle volunteering. Most of all, effective time management is clearly demonstrated when they  turn up at the interview around 15 minutes before the start time,  and are actually prepared for the interview! Collaboration skills Not everyone is a natural born leader and that is OK as many organisations want to see how effective people can work in  team environments. The need to work with others is imperative throughout your career so being able to demonstrate how you appreciate the opinion of others, encourage others to participate and be willing to share your own ideas are great ways to demonstrate your collaboration. Goals As silly or obvious as it may sound, already having some goals to strive towards is a great thing for all individuals looking to start their career. The desire to develop capabilities, to learn and to grow shows great personal courage and commitment; this is something that many organisations seek in prospective employees.  Young professionals need to be confident in articulating what it is they would like to achieve in the next 5 years. Be mindful that these goals need to be realistic and respect that early on in anyones career,  there will be  a lot of growth that needs to happen  before becoming the CEO! We need to do what we can to support and  help youths develop the skills they need to succeed in their careers. Being employable in the current market is not simply reliant on the level of qualification they hold, or how high their  grades were when completing that qualification. My Website Growth Story I have been blogging at ClassyCareerGirl.com since 2010 but it wasn’t until I really made the commitment to grow my website that I started to see the results. How The Royal Bank of Canada Attracts Talent Globally To get a Canadian perspective on the world of employer branding, we sat down with Estela Vazquez Perez to understand the approach she has taken to help maintain Royal Bank of Canadas high performance culture. When I took the job I was thinking, Well, you know, Im seeing these stats and the grass is green, so what are we going to fix? The challenge was  about sustaining high performance and engaging people. You cant sleep and hope that everything continues. So, personally, day-to-day, I need to work on differentiating the organisation. Thats a hard thing to do because we have very strong banks in Canada. So, in terms of differentiating, we need to have a good way of communicating and having a clear  vision of the future, and also compelling career propositions. So that was a challenge for me and with that being said, the job gets very interesting when you can bring this to life through peoples beliefs and presenting that value proposition. Specifically with talent challenges, like  many, its about attracting and retaining tech talent, that would be number one. Two would  be including youth in the conversation of co-creating the future and the last one, if you split from youth or tech talent just in general, we need to hire people with the right attitude. Im trying to move beyond what skill set you to need to work in a company. Everybodys getting ready for that and developing the skills, but finding the right attitude is tough. Its hard to select. So, those are my three focus areas for now. Key challenges that just dont go away and I think theyre going to be stronger. This is not just for the future of this company, but this is for the future of Canada in general, the world, right? How does your work with talent attraction address these challenges? Multiple ways but Ill mention three. One that  Im working on right now is our employment brand content strategy, and this is to show cool things happening at RBC. So, people have  these ideas of what the bank is like, but then  we show them that we have all these amazing  aspects. We are very good at  connecting personal aspirations to our collective ambition, and then were also transforming culture and driving the future of banking. The  greatest technologies sometimes get invented right here and were helping people in other parts of the world to keep things safe for our clients. Although, sometimes  just story-telling is not good enough. You have to show people how that happens, for example how a young  intern might come in and became a part of this  great technology that we now have patented. So, were working on that. Thats one part of doing it. Another part is a good strong employee brand platform. So, we design employee experiences to connect hearts and minds so people deepen their understanding of why we are here, why we exist, and why were in this company. Thats a good selection tool and, at the same time, an attraction tool. But then we need to connect them to whats in it for them, to have exceptional experiences that give them a good life, and they can continue to be with us. The third point will be to amplify the strategy and action in a digital way. This is really about enabling. Enabling marketing communications, change management, human resources, to bring these conversations to life in the digital platforms that are available. You can say maybe your career site, maybe your Instagram account, maybe our Twitter account. So, we have experts managing those channels and I bring that integration to have a story that makes sense and that its the same across those channels. 4 Lessons Learned from My Working Vacation - Career Pivot Working Vacation The termworking vacationhas become the norm in Corporate America. It is an even more common concept among the self-employed. I am currently on a 2+ week working vacation. I have learned multiple lessons during this trip, some of which have surprised me! My wife and I started with a long weekend in Galveston, TX. Galveston has become a regular place for us to rest and relax. New Orleans was the next stop. It was there that I attended the Birkman Conference for 3 days. Our next destination was Destin, Florida. We’ll stay 5 days before meandering back to Austin. This is the first extended vacation we have taken since I started Career Pivot in 2012. Enjoying more than a few days off at a time has been a tough lesson for me to learnâ€"working for yourself is complicated. Working Vacation â€" Setting Boundaries The first lesson I learned was that I could set boundaries. Typically, I have about 25 clients in various phases of career transition. I meet with my clients at different intervalsâ€"some weekly, some semi-regularly, and others, as-needed. During my vacation, I offered my clients the option to meet either once during this time off or not at all. Well, I do have a couple of clients who are going through stressful times so I met with them weekly. I am a guy! Asking for directions in unnatural. This time, I set boundaries and it worked! My boss is still a jerk, but not as much as before! I have written about my bossâ€"meâ€"before. My boss is a real jerk! If you have not read my previous post, My Boss is a Jerk …wait a minute I am my own boss!, I suggest you read it now. I wrote this post in 2012 when I had been in business less than a year. Listen to the most recent episode The second lesson I learned was that I am actually becoming a better boss. When I managed people in previous corporate positions, I like to think that I was pretty good at managing. But myself? Well, that is another story. I am not perfect, and I still push myself a bit too hard, but I am a whole lot nicer to myself now than I was back in the early days of Career Pivot. My clients have good hearts! I’ve been amazed at the respect my clients have demonstrated regarding my boundaries. Some have even imposed them on me by insisting we skip our regular meetings for several weeks. This week, I met with a client who had an important interview opportunity present itself, so he wanted to discuss his positioning. He hesitated about reaching out to me but asked if I could take ashortphone call, which I did. I am not sure why, but I have been surprised at how respectful everyone has been about my vacation. It may be a Working Vacation, but I can work from anywhere. During our vacation, I have responded to new client inquiries and even booked a speaking gig. The speaking job is a group of hospital CEOs. I will present information on the multi-generational workplace. I have given 3 interviews for various online publications throughout the week. When reporters contact me, I make time for themâ€"quickly. Most reporters work on very tight deadlines and, as an entrepreneur, you can never get quoted too frequently. Another thing I do is have client introductory calls every few days. I am writing this post on a balcony overlooking the beach in Destin, Florida. If I chose to, I can work from anywhere as long as I have my trusty iPhone, laptop, and an internet connection. This trip has been a trial run on what it would take to become a digital nomad.One option my wife and I are considering is selling our condo in Austin and becoming permanent nomads…similar to what Lynne and Tim Martin describe in their book, Home Sweet Anywhere: How We Sold Our House, Created a New Life and Saw the World. Empathic Parenting A Way of Relating that Fosters Self-Esteem in Our Children Have you ever had difficulty determining when enough is enough with your child? Or questioned when you should draw the line, rather than be flexible and give in to his requests? I know I have. These are issues that all parents face regarding discipline and how best to provide the guidance our children need along with the love, nurture, and empathy they most long for. In working with coaching and therapy clients, and as a parent myself, Ive come to understand the deep complexities involved in being a loving parent while at the same time providing effective guidance and authority. These are not simple, easy, or comfortable issues. But Ive found that asking oneself the following five questions regularly can be beneficial in helping chart a course that is both loving and empowering for our children and ourselves. 1) When my child is acting up, what is he longing for on a deeper level? Often, a child acts up or misbehaves for purposes that are not readily apparent on the surface. Misbehaving can in fact be a childs way of gaining your attention and direct engagement with him. He may be craving your attention and love, and unable to achieve these in a productive manner. Sometimes, acting out is a way to distract parents from their own conflicts so that the attention is again refocused on the child. It can be a form of homeostasis, keeping the family intact and functioning. So, the key question here is: What may my childs misbehavior be saying that I havent yet fully understood? 2) Who is in control here? Do I need to set clearer, more consistent boundaries?Often as parents, our own insecurities about our parenting skills lead us to doubt our ability to control and question whether we rightfully deserve a place in this executive role. When this occurs, we typically lose our ability to be effective and authoritative. In essence, we have allowed our children to climb up into the executive position and make decisions for us. If you experience a sense of being out of control with your children and feel as if they are running the show, it is helpful to stop and examine your beliefs and attitudes around setting and enforcing guidelines. Are you consistent, and firm? Do you provide natural consequences when your children do not behave as you need them to? When we make an examination of our difficulties in acting authoritatively in our own lives, we often find beliefs and fears carried over from our childhood about ourselves, our parents, the nature of love, support, and self-assertion, that need to be re-examined. 3) Do I validate my child? Do I let her know that, while I may not agree with her position, it is a valid one to her and to me?What we humans crave deeply and consistently is validation-experiencing others support that our personal beliefs and actions make sense. Yet often when we struggle with our children, we invalidate them as we attempt to provide guidance about ways in which we wish them to change. We can discredit or undermine their behavior or thoughts, telling them they are wrong, silly, immature, or crazy. A different approach that builds self-esteem is to express and show that while we need some change in their behavior, we still understand and can relate to their position, and consider it valid. 4) Am I on the same page with my spouse so that the parental unit is strong and cohesive?In my work with families, one of the most common patterns to emerge involves one spouse unwittingly using a child as a tool against the other spouse. Why does this occur? When we feel in some way powerless to affect a desired change in our marriage, we can find ourselves using a child to side with us, or to be pitted against our spouse. In this way, we become more powerful and feel less alone. Further, when a child is acting out and disregarding one parent, often there are ways in which the child is gaining support in his struggle from the other spouse. The key questions at the heart of this dynamic is: Am I on the same page with my spouse about parenting and about our own relationship? If not, am I involving my child in any way, through conflict or direct collusion, to get back at my spouse? 5) What are my parenting goals? Am I fostering my childs own unique path or am I trying to make it in the image of someone elses?Finally, a very significant step in effective, empathic parenting is to ask ourselves the questions, and answer: What are my key goals in parenting? In the end, what am I hoping to achieve as a good parent? Is your goal to provide love and support, offer guidelines for development, or to foster the growth of a happy, healthy, productive individual? Or perhaps it is to create a loving, safe, supportive environment for your child to become all s/he is meant to be in this world, based on his or her own dreams, passions, energies, and goals? Whatever our answers are to these pivotal questions, the process of exploration is very helpful in charting our own authentic parenting course. Increasing our awareness will ultimately help us expand our choices as to how to react, communicate, and behave as parents. In the end, I believe that empathic parenting benefits and empowers not only our children, but ourselves, and future generations as well.

How Important is Your Resume - Every once in a while, career experts get ourselves all wrapped up in the raging controversy: How important is your resume? The question is it key to your search, or, with linkedin and other online tools, is it as outdated as a rotary phone? In the past, marketing guru Seth Godins post suggesting that if you are exceptional, you dont need a resume, got everyone buzzing, and there is new buzz on the Career Hub site, with my colleague Deb Dibs post on the subject. I recently quoted executive recruiter Thad Greer, author of The Executive Rules, as saying that the resume isprobably the most important professional document youll have in your entire life. So, which is it? How important are resumes for job seekers? If all job seekers fully engaged in the type of networking that enhances their ability to use the pull, not push job search methodology, it is true that the resume would become less important as a first-line contact point. I advise my clients to participate in Web 2.0 strategies to pull interest from potential employers. LinkedIn has become the absolute must have online presence and Twitter is a terrific way to share information, network and yes, promote your brand. Facebook, when managed well, has a lot to offer as a third-line strategy. For strong writers, I suggest (1) authoring a blog and/or (2) leaving smart comments on blogs related to your industry. These are terrific ways to showcase your knowledge and expertise. Then, of course, there are all of the in-person networking strategies professionals should use to enhance their profiles in their fields. So, if you are good enough at using these strategies (or, as Seth Godin has said if you are exceptional), you may be invited to apply for or interview for a job before youve provided a resume. However, as noted above, most organizations will request a resume at some point in the process. The likelihood is that it will be at the same time they ask for you to apply. (As in We are very interested in learning more about how you can contribute to our organization. Please forward your resume to.) As noted above, recruiters clearly need to see a resume. Does all of this mean that the resume is less important? Ultimately, I dont think so. While it may not always serve as the employers first impression, it is still key to support the positive view a job seeker needs to promote. The fact is, most people will still rely quite a bit on the resume if they want to get the call for an interview.
