Why you fail to accomplish resolutions Youre not listening to emotions

Why you fail to accomplish resolutions Youre notlage listening to emotionsWhy you fail to accomplish resolutions Youre not listening to emotionsNew Years resolutions often fail because toxic emotions and experiences from ur past can sabotage us or keep us stuckverzierung with the same old thoughts, patterns, and regrets. - Debbie FordIt is impossible to change ur behavior without addressing ur emotions. We can manage ur attitudes, but emotions are out of our control. Thats the biggest challenge that lies ahead. Even though we cant control our emotions, we must confront them if we want to achieve our resolutions. You cant block negative emotions from your life. Whether its fear, anxiety, or guilt, you are not immune from the emotional rollercoaster - change is not a linear process, but full of highs and lows.Unfortunately, most people think that success depends on a method. By looking for a 5-step process to achieving our goals, they fail to address the emotional battle inside their m inds.Emotions inside your headThe problem with New Years resolutions is that people try to adopt too many behavioral changes at once. It doesnt work. I dont care if youre a world-class CEO - youll quit. - Tim FerrissTheres nothing wrong with productivity methods. Without proper discipline, tools, and goals, managing your emotions alone is not enough. However, if you cant understand and manage your emotions, achieving your goals will become a lost battle.Science has made a lot of progress in the battle against procrastination by tackling it as an emotion-management problem rather than a productivity one, as I wrote here.Lets start by understanding the fundamental differences between emotions, feelings, and mood.Emotions are an instant response to a specific trigger - our brain releases emotion chemicals in 1/2 second. The whole body experiences this instinctive reaction that lasts just 6 seconds.Feelings, on the other hand, play out in our heads - we start to process the chemical reaction. They are mental associations we process the emotion and let it soak in. Feelings are personal and acquired through experience.Lastly, a mood is an emotional state. Its less specific, less intense and less likely to be provoked by a particular event. They affect the way we respond to stimuli - our moods creates a bias in favor of reacting negatively or positively.Emotions are more complex and nuanced - most people cant really understand whats causes their pain or comfort. Moods are more straightforward - You are either in a good mood or a bad one.Emotions are not just negative or positiveUnderstanding the basic emotions will help you recognize, name, and navigate them. The most influential classification is Robert Plutchiks wheel - it outlines eight basic emotions gemeindeland, anticipation, joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness and disgust.Emotions are a response to a specific trigger - each one has a particular purpose.Image by https//www.6seconds.orgDividing emotions into positive and positive ones created a bad rap for the latter. Most of us were raised to show the good ones and keep the bad ones to ourselves. However, all emotions are part of your experience. You cant have joy without experiencing sadness or courage without fear.Trying to erase negative emotions creates more trouble - we cant run away from our them. Lets face them.Being positive is not about having only positive emotions, but to embracing our whole-self - both positive and negative - rather than idealize our life. As Golda Meir said, Those who dont know how to weep with their whole hearts dont know how to laugh either.Emotions are fluid - you can turn them into your favor regardless if they are positive or negative. How to improve your emotion-managementWhen negative emotions churn, it takes courage not to flinch. Most of us are clueless about how our emotions affect our productivity. To develop effective responses, we must learn how and why they manifest.Anger, fear, envy, guilt, and sadness are the most common negative emotions that get in our way - we must manage them if we want to achieve our goals. Knowing more about these emotions increases your ability to identify, name, and handle them.1. AngerAnger is one of the most common negative emotions, especially at work. It can result from interpersonal conflicts, frustrations, or unfair treatment. Sometimes anger is triggered by reliving something that happened in the past.Lets say you tried to learn a new language a couple of years ago and quit. Now you are giving it another try. The moment you feel stuck, you will immediately remember you failed on your previous attempt. Reliving that failure can make you angry and suck the energy out of you. Thus, increasing your chances of quitting (again). The greatest remedy for anger is delay. ? Thomas PaineOne key for managing anger is to take some distance. Calm down before making any decision. Reflect on why you are angry? Whats the cause of you upsetness? Having unrealistic expectations is what makes most people frustrated. Maybe you set the bar too high. Or you expect progress to be linear versus a bumpy road.Source Demetri MartinAnger feeds more anger - it creates endless resentment and frustration. Are you too harsh on yourself? When anger is stirring, remain still. Listen to what that chemical reaction is telling you. Whats the problem that you are fighting? Discriminate real issues from imaginary ones - unnecessary pressure is not the same as room for growth. Practice chopping up tasks into smaller ones.2. FearThe fear of failure crashes our ability to achieve our goals. Even worse, they procrastinate taking the first step - they fail to launch a new project or habit. The reasons we are afraid of failing varies from person to person. Most people take things too personal - if they cant achieve something, they become a failure. Others believe they are not good enough or are afraid of being happy. Many of us approach new habits w ith a perfectionist mind - we cant accept we are not flawless.Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors. - African ProverbMost people are unlikely to share their fears with others, especially in the workplace. Fear can be a foe or your ally - its your call to face it or not. Living fearlessly is not about not being afraid, but learning to dance with fear. It doesnt mean ignoring your challenges but looking at fear in the eye. By facing your emotions, you meet the world with an open heart - you embrace your vulnerability. What makes you afraid? Write down all the reason that comes to mind every time fear distracts you from your goals. What are you really afraid of? Ask this question over and over. Dont judge your answers. Naming your fears is the first step toward befriending them.True fearlessness is not the absence of fear but befriending fear.Fear turns on our defense mechanism - we feel we are in danger even if we are not. Whats attacking you? Wheres this attack coming from? W hy do you feel attacked? Ironically, fear has an upside - when your brain senses a threat, your ability to focus heightens.3. EnvyEnvy and jealousy travel together but are different emotions. Envy is a two-person relationship I want what you have. Jealousy is a three-person triangle I want the recognition you have from others.Bertrand Russell said Beggars do not envy millionaires, though of course, they will envy other beggars who are more successful.Jealousy originates from the prospect of failure envy from actual failure - when things dont go our way, we want to be as successful as others. Thats the problem of comparing ourselves to others - we idealize their success rather than focusing on making progress. We have the notion of learning all backward - its not easy, but a painful experience as I wrote here. Our brain is a muscle it hurts when we stretch beyond our comfort zone. Pain is an indicator of progress - we must continue to move forward, not run away. Envy adds more pa in - we compare our initial progress to those who have been doing something for years. Success is the end of a long road, focus on todays steps, not on the final destination.Avoid comparing yourself to others. Become your own benchmark. When we stop judging ourselves, we set our potential free.4. GuiltWhen guilt competes for your attention, it usually wins. Guilt is a common feeling that signals that our actions (or inaction) might cause harm to another person. I should have done something differently I should be doing more Guilt gets us stuck - we rehash the past rather than live the present moment. In psychology, the term Zeigarnik effect refers to people remembering uncompleted or interrupted tasks better than completed tasks. We blame ourselves for not having done better or more. Productivity blame is the nagging feeling that you should be doing more - you feel you will never reach your goals.Mistakes are always forgivable if one has the courage to admit them. - Bruce LeeProd uctivity blame is a mindset of feeling bad about not creating, achieving or working hard enough. We usually feel guilty because we were taught to fill our days with the important stuff - we emotionally punish ourselves when we think we are doing something trivial.Treat yourself with kindness. Putting too much pressure hurts our productivity. Self-appreciation is essential - it builds a strong foundation for us to grow and become the best version of ourselves. Why do you feel guilty about not doing more? Where is that pressure coming from? Are you fair with yourself? Or too critical? Treat yourself kindly without lowering your bar.5. SadnessFeeling sad crushes our enthusiasm and drains our productivity - we feel our energy is low and cant focus. Sadness has direct repercussions - we stop showing up, we procrastinate and fail to do what we want to.Sadness makes us feel isolated - the moment when we need more help is when we hide away the most. Embrace sadness at your own pace but dont seclude yourself - sharing affection can help you ease the pain.Be understanding. We are not the most productive persons when we are sad. Focus your energy on recovering first before trying to achieve your resolutions. Additional pressure can make you feel sadder and also guilty. Sadness, just like anger, can seed more negative emotions if you fight it, rather than accept it.We must understand that sadness is an ocean, and sometimes we drown, while other days we are forced to swim. - R.M. DrakeIf you feel very sad, acknowledge is not the time to be concerned about being productive. Only you can determine when you are ready to challenge yourself. abflug gradually but dont get caught in a constant state of sadness. Getting back to your normal routine or making progress - no matter how small - will reenergize you.Ask yourself How do I feel today? Whats possible? Pause from time to time to confront the cause of your sadness. Make room to let it all out when necessary. The less you hide your real emotions, the less they will get in your way. Learning to cope with adversity strengthens your ability to bounce back.Your turnEmotions are created by incorrect perceptions - there is a gap between appearance and reality. Understanding how emotions affect your productivity requires practice.Self-awareness is key - the more you know yourself, the better you can deal with your emotions. Treat yourself kindly, embrace your emotions. Pay attention. What are they trying to tell you? Learn to adjust your routine to your emotions rather than avoiding them. Or it will backfire.Naming your emotions is a critical step - its easier to manage something when you know what you are dealing with. I hope the above guide helps you improving at listening, naming, and understanding your emotions. Avoid These Ad Agency Interview Mistakes

Avoid These Ad Agency Interview MistakesAvoid These Ad Agency Interview MistakesWhen the time comes for you to interview for a new advertising job, you need to be prepared. Knowing what notlage to say is just as important as knowing what to say at the interview. In addition, tailor your portfolio to align with each specific role for which you are applying and research the specific agency, so you appear well-prepared and knowledgeable about the agency and the industry. Show Agency Loyalty If asked where you see yourself in five years, dont say with another company. This is insulting and lets an employer think youre biding your time until you can leave for something better. Rather, you want to give the impression that you expect to work there for a long time. In five years, you see yourself as being a strong member of the agency, helping to steer and shape its direction and doing great work. Keep your eye on the prize, not the future. Never talk about divorce before youre even marr ied. Update Your Portfolio If you work in the creative department, your portfolio is a key representation of your past and present work. It should contain your current work, past work, any awards, and printed or broadcast content. Think of it as your career in one portable case or handy website. In the hectic world of advertising, its very easy to overlook a portfolio, but it needs to be updated often. That great campaign you created 15 years ago may not be as impressive as it was at the time. Unless its something classic like the 1984 spot, keep changing the content so it stays relevant, which lets your future employer know youve been busy and have recent work. Keep your portfolio organized. That means having a logical progression throughout, even on yourwebsite, split into campaigns, with examples of each part of the campaign. Spec work is fine if its great. Start strong, finish with your best work, and put everything else in the middle. But, everything else should still be go od work. Remember, a portfolio is only as strong as the weakest piece of work. Be tough and cut the weak pieces. Also, peoples opinions differ- some will love your work, and others will hate it. While you should always be ready to take criticism, dont change your portfolio after every interview, and dont be afraid to defend your work. Sometimes, you will meet creative directors who take shots at you just to see how well you defend yourself. Remain confident about your work. Do Your Homework Walking into an agency with little knowledge of their business is a terrible idea. Regardless of your busy work life and impressive portfolio, you must have current knowledge about the agency doing the hiring. The interviewer is most likely going to ask questions directly related to the state of the agency. From current clientsto award news and the makeup of the executive staff, your answers will show the interviewer how serious you are about getting a job with their agency. Youre not expecte d to know every last detail, but youshould know the key players, what theyve been up to over the last few months, recent headlines they have made, their major accounts, any other wins theyve had, and anything else that could be brought up in an interview. Study hard, pay attention, and be proactive in the interview. Be the one to bring up topics such as an account win, a new creative director or planner, and any big awards. Dress Appropriately Advertising is a creative profession where the dress code is likely to vary among departments. For example, if you work in the accounts, production, sales, or finance departments, youll probably be fine wearing your best formal clothes, but you should try and add a touch of flair to be remembered. A noticeable tie, a cool accessory or hairstyle, something that says you mean business but also know what it takes to stand out. Advertising is all about presentation, and you need to make a memorable impression. When it comes to the creative dep artment, there are no rules. Some art directors and writers turn up looking like theyve been on tour with a rock band for three months. Its fine, theyre creative, they get to dress that way. Other creatives turn up in matching red suits. Again, no problem. This all depends on the department, and that relates directly to doing your homework about the agency. However, as a creative, turning up looking like an accountant with no personality will not do you any favors. Unless your research tells you otherwise, your creativity should shine through and not be disguised by a bland wardrobe. And yes, jeans and T-shirts are usually fine. But if in doubt, get feedback from creatives who already work at the agency. Team Player You may be asked why you left your last agency. Although you may be tempted, avoid all negative comments. First, it is unprofessional to badmouth a previous employer. Also, the hiring agency may feel that you could speak negatively about them as well. Also, the indus try changes quickly due to account losses, wins, mergers, and changes in the economy. Keeping a good relationship with your current employer, including the appearance of liking them, is vital, as you may easily cross paths again. If anyone asks you why you want to leave the agency, reply with a positive answer, like that you want to expand your portfolio and experiences by working on different accounts you want to expand you skill set at an agency that has different disciplines or you want a change of scenery to stay fresh. Humble but Confident Some people think there are tricks to use that get an ad agency to pay attention. The biggest misnomer is that egos are welcomed, even applauded, which is not true. Even if you are the best copywriter or art director in the country, you shouldnt be walking into the interview with that chip on your shoulder. Be confident in your abilities, but also know that you have mora to learn. A little humility goes a long way. Looking bored, yawning, or making any other gesture that suggests you want to be somewhere else will be regarded negatively. You want to be excited about the interview, even if your sole purpose is to network and not get the job. Also, dont suggest or assume that you already have the job. Maybe you are the best candidate and you know it. But you should always act like you are hopeful and confident, without expecting to succeed. Turn Off Devices Human resource representatives often list answering a cellphone as the most infuriating aspect of a bad interview. If youre in advertising, you will rely on your phone more than many other professions. Many of your campaigns will be targeted digitally, and you will also have a long list of contacts, social media colleagues, and other avenues to explore through your phone. But disable your phone before you get to your interview. Also, you may think that by answering an urgent call, or responding to an urgent text, you are projecting importance. However, an emplo yer will view accepting the call as rude and poor judgement, which is likely disqualifying. The only suitable time to bring out your phone is if the interviewer asks for online work samples that you can show using your phone. Practice interviewing tactics until you know them well. And in addition to watching your words and actions, organize your portfolio so it represents your career in the most favorable light possible, and research the agency and its people prior to the interview.

How to Write a Cover Letter

How to Write a Cover Letter How to Write a Cover Letter What is a Cover Letter? A cover letter is a one page document you need to send with your resume to introduce yourself in a memorable and personal way to the hiring managers. Basically, it is a brief description of your achievements so far relevant to the job’s requirements. What to Include? Contact Information and Date Salutation Opening Paragraph Middle Paragraph Closing Paragraph Signature Guidelines for writing a Cover Letter Introduction Firstly, you need to write the date along with your contact information. That will include your name, your address, your phone number and your professional email address. Then, check who you are writing to. Rather than just including Sir or Madam, include the individual’s name along with his or her position in the company. It proves that you have worked hard to find out and given some thought instead of carelessly writing it. Now, give a brief summary of which position you are applying for and why. Tell what your goals are and what you have learned so far. Tell About Yourself You should not go on telling stories about yourself in the letter, just include the relevant stuff only. Tell them about your skills and experiences required for the job. You just need to give them the idea that you are experienced enough, refrain yourself from telling them everything in detail. Use short sentences with impactful words making yourself as clear as possible. Do Not Lie Honesty is actually the best policy in this case. Making up lies in your cover letter only reduces the chances of them reading your resume. So, try to be as honest as possible. Try To Be Different While matching your words according to the job description, try not to be the same as everyone one. Do avoid the common words or phrases, and point out something in you that only you have or at least try to make it sound something new. Add a little variation to make yourself stand out.

Study says this is the best color to wear for job interview and date

Study says this is the best color to wear for job interview and date Study says this is the best color to wear for job interview and date Colors mean different things and can have a deep impact on not only our moods but the people we come into contact with when we are wearing them. But can a color be as powerful as a great resume? Apparently yes.According to new research, black is the way to go for a job interview. The study surveyed  1,500 British people and 43% chose black as the optimal color for an interview. And for men, it is also the chosen color for a first date. For women, red is the color for the first date because it is associated with love. Wink, wink. But if you want to just have fun during a night out, wear silver (12% said this was the way to go.)If you weren’t aware that colors can have such a profound impact, you aren’t alone. Over 75% of those surveyed were not aware of the psychological effects of colors. After all,  wearing green can say something very different than wearing yellow in a meeting.Psychologist Dr. Becky Spelman, who was involved with the research in the study, told The Mirror, “A n awareness of the cultural and psychological factors at play when it comes to color helps us get to know ourselves better and also gives us a way to communicate.“Through the clothing and accessories we choose, we can use color to communicate, without words, a range of messages and emotions. For example, if someone dresses in very bright colors, at least on some level they are saying they want to be seen,” he added. But if you are just looking to run more miles at the gym or go up a weight set, wear blue. Apparently, it is a very motivational color. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Employee Engagement Tips From Undercover Boss

Employee Engagement Tips From Undercover Boss Employee Engagement Tips From Undercover Boss Employee Engagement Tips From Undercover Boss Holzman The success of the television series Undercover Bosswould have been welcome any time, but the show came along at a uniquely fortuitous moment for our production company, Studio Lambert. It was our first show in the United States and while the benefits of a hit TV series need no explanation, there was a less obvious and, for me, entirely unexpected result that would ultimately shape our company; it would also become a valuable management lesson in cultivating employee motivation and employee engagement. Filming a CEOs Undercover Spot Checks It started on the pilot. It was a great coup for us to land Waste Management (WM) and their boss, Larry ODonnell. WMs vast and varied operations stretch across the country and encompass hundreds of collection operations, transfer stations, landfill sites, waste-to-energy and recycling plants, along with a fleet of over 21,000 vehicles. As Chief Operating Officer, Larry had oversight of all of this along with the more than 45,000 Waste Management team members who make their company run. Larry had been in his position for a few years at this point and had so much confidence in his operations and such an earnest desire to learn how he could improve them that he was willing to allow our camera crew to tag along as he went undercover within his company to spot check systems and their staff. Our team, on the other hand, was brand new. Some of us had worked together before but many of us had not. Our first day filming with Larry was also our first day filming together. We were just getting to know each other and our roles and relationships were only just beginning to be defined. As we struggled to stay on top of everything, traveling to a new city every day, shipping gear, moving staff, waking early, working late I couldnt help but compare my struggles in managing a 20-person operation with Larry ODonnells aplomb in dropping in unexpectedly (and in disguise, no less) on some of his 45,000 employees. It would not be the last time I marveled at the executive talent we were lucky enough to observe closely while filming this series. Of course, their undercover missions were not always easy ones, but suffice it to say, it takes a great deal of skill to manage the enormous companies featured on Undercover Boss. We were receiving weekly tutorials in the art of management from some of the very best bosses in America. The Power of Team Effort One lesson in particular has been especially resonant for me. I think this lesson lies at the heart of the shows appeal: the importance of appreciating and acknowledging the contributions of every member of a team. It may seem simple, and I suppose it is, but it boils down to remembering to say thank you. As we worked on our new book, Undercover Boss: Inside the TV Phenomenon That Is Changing Bosses and Employees Everywhere, we encountered the benefits and importance of this elementary idea over and over again. At the end of each episode of Undercover Boss, our bosses reveal their true identities in one-on-one meetings with the frontline employees theyve worked beside. In most cases, the boss has been impressed or moved by the employees. Often, they take the opportunity at these meetings to thank and appreciate those employees for their work. And as weve witnessed each week, these moments can be very emotional. Watching these moments first hand, I couldnt help but be moved to reflect on our staff and the contributions each person makes to this show. We obviously appreciate that each of us has a role to perform and that our success is largely the sum of those contributions, but its one thing to know it and another to say it and do it. Seeing how moved the employees are when their boss thanks them and watching as bosses see for themselves the incredibly hard-working and talented people who contribute to their teams success prompted me to take a fresh eye to our staff and to my style of management. As we produced our first show and began to assemble our team in the United States, we placed a strong emphasis on appreciating all of our team members. The idea that we are only as good as our people was fixed at the forefront of our minds. And we knew that the best way we could attract and retain them was by acknowledging and appreciating their unique contributions. Undercover Boss taught us that. Strive to Promote Employee Accountability Over the past two years, Studio Lambert has grown quickly. Today, in addition to Undercover Boss, we have added four other series and even more pilots. Our shows reflect a range of styles and sensibilities, but they share a few common threads. They are the work of an engaged group of talented and passionate filmmakers who do much more than just come to work each day. From the lowest entry-level production assistant to the executive producers in charge of each show, Studio Lambert employs some of the best people that can be found in any position in our business. Each of them is the reason for our success.
